I'm sorry to announce that, with this week's show, "Jazzadelica" is going on an indefinite hiatus. Though it's been a great pleasure for me to host this weekly program for the last 2+ years, my professional commitments are currently leaving me little time for volunteer activities at KFJC. While the weekly show is over for now, I do plan to continue at KFJC with some occasional fill-in airshifts and specials. I'll be sure to announce those in advance via this list and the Jazzadelica web site. But for now, let me just say thanks for all your support and encouragement over the last two years! Now on to the playlist...
THE JAZZADELICA VINYL BLOWOUT: This week's show was completely devoted to recent 7" and 12" singles and EP's. From the latest West London grooves, bossa beats and 2-steppin' garage, to downtempo abstractions, jazzy jungle and more...everything played tonight can only be found, at least for now, on vinyl.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: RESIDUE by Hefner (Inertia Records).
Those of us enamored by the first couple of Hefner EP's have had a
long wait for this debut album from Lee Jones. But it was definitely
worth the wait. RESIDUE retains the cinematic slant of his earlier EP's
but adds a pop sensibility, via some lovely vocals by Josee Hurlock.
The most apt sonic comparisons would probably be The Cinematic Orchestra
or Les Gammas...artists who find strength in subtlety...as this is an
understated but beautiful record.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: OUR AIM IS TO SATISFY RED SNAPPER (Warp).
Red Snapper are one of the few real "bands" on the Warp Records roster.
Their music is grounded in live performance rather than electronic
sequencing, and their sound is as unique as their approach to making
it. Red Snapper's third studio album (excluding an EP collection)
continues to create thick and moody atmospheres where jazz, funk, and
soul influences intertwine with modern electronics. Sometimes gritty
and sometimes gorgeous, this Red Snapper is prepared with just the right
musical spices, and is guaranteed to satisfy more than just themselves.

PLEA BARGAIN DEPT: This weekend kicked off the annual (i.e, only ONCE per year) KFJC fundraiser, wherein my fellow DJ's and I get to remind you what a TREMENDOUS musical resource KFJC is, and hopefully will continue to be, to the Bay Area and beyond. Our fundraiser continues through October 29, but next Sunday will be the last fundraiser show for "Jazzadelica." If you're a regular listener, I urge you to show your appreciation by donating at that time. If that's not convenient, just call our 24-hour donation line anytime at 650-941-6800, or donate via our secure web site at www.kfjc.org. I could tell you about the bounty of thank-you gifts we have to offer, but...'NUFF SAID! And now we come to the...
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: DRUM + BOSSA by Landslide.
Percussionist/programmer Tim Land's profile has been steadily on the
rise, thanks to a couple of top-notch singles and compilation tracks
released on Hospital Records. With the arrival of his full-length
Landslide album, I think we can say that Tim Land has arrived as well.
DRUM + BOSSA is a completely satisfying mixture of drum'n'bass, broken
beats, jazz and Brazilian rhythms, with a subtle pop touch. Recommended
for fans of the West London sound.

CELEBRATION IS SWEET: This week's show marked the second anniversary of "Jazzadelica" on KFJC. Among the highlights...a set of new-and-unreleased music from the West London posse...a tribute to the late, great bossa nova guitarist Baden Powell...the complete "Brainfreeze" session from DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist...lots of ticket giveaways... plus the...
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: THE GREAT LOST SUN RA ALBUMS. For a short time in the early 70's, astral traveler Sun Ra enjoyed major-label status via a licensing and recording deal with Impulse Records. Unfortunately, that relationship was short-lived, and several planned reissues and new recordings never saw the light of day. Now, after considerable legal entanglements, two previously-unreleased albums from this period have finally surfaced on the Evidence label. CYMBALS and CRYSTAL SPEARS are the albums in question, now packaged together as a double-CD. For the uninitiated, this might not be the best place to dive in to the Sun Ra oeuvre. (I'd recommend either THE SINGLES COLLECTION or one of many live recordings.) But for the devoted fans, this is a significant musical event. Congratulations to Evidence for wrestling this one away from the lawyers.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: CLUB AFRICA 2. London DJ Russ Dewbury returns
with another funky collection of Afro-rhythms on the Strut label.
Included this time out: the Manu Dibango classic "New Bell"...Roy Ayers
with the Fela-inspired "Black Family"...two tracks from Hugh Masekela...
a storming closer by the amazing Letta Mbulu...and a whole bunch of other
tracks you've probably never heard! This CD has barely made it out of my
car stereo for the last two of weeks, and it still hasn't worn out its
welcome.

SPECIAL: Tonight's special edition of "Jazzadelica" focused on a group of West London-based artists and record labels that are breaking stylistic genre boundaries to produce club music that's hard to classify. Whether you call it "broken beat," "house not house," or, as producer Phil Asher puts it, "21st century fusion," it's definitely music worth seeking out.

SPECIAL GUESTS: Sitting in with yours truly this week were two
special guests from San Francisco. DJ's Vinnie Esparza and Cool Chris
Veltri stopped by to talk about their new record labels (Dis-joint and
Re-joint) and to give us a taste of the first two releases, from Dub
Diablo and Nino Nardini. As an added bonus, they each ransacked KFJC's
music library and assembled a choice set of jazzadelic grooves.
No ALBUM OF THE WEEK was featured, in order to spend more time with
my guests. However, I will put in a plug for...

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: THE NEW LATINAIRES 3 (Ubiquity).
Round 3 of the NEW LATINAIRES series finds heavy hitters Ubiquity
delivering the expected musical knockouts. Things get off to a powerful
start with a storming UFO remix of Snowboy's "Oya Ye Ye," followed by
the batucada-meets-bossa fusion of Amalgamation of Soundz' "Batunova
Scat." Elsewhere, familiar names deliver the quality goods under new
guises: check the exclusives from Quorum (Andrew Jervis, Paul Scriver,
and Jonah Sharp), Locqate (West Londoner Orin Walters), and Tempo 2
(Anthony Nicholson). Also of note is a percussive collaboration from
musical iconoclasts Jimi Tenor and Maurice Fulton, aka Watershine. And
connecting the dots back to Volume 2 in the series, Snowboy's dancefloor
bomb "Casa Forte" gets revisited here in a cooler style, courtesy of
remixers Pathless. The LATINAIRES series continues to be one of the
most vital snapshots of jazz-dance culture; here's hoping that we're in
for a long run.
SPOTLIGHT ON TOWNSHIP JIVE: From the late 40's until the early
60's, South Africa's shebeens jumped to the sounds of marabi: an urban
swing style combining African musical idioms with American influences
such as jazz, doo wop, and gospel. Much of this music has been largely
unheard since original release. But now, thanks to a few strategic CD
reissues, we can begin to piece together a vibrant musical scene.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Barking at the heels of Senor Coconut's Kraftwerk tribute album comes another surprising and delightful Latin music hybrid. This time the instigator is Jesus Alemany, whose band Cubanismo traveled to New Orleans for a crash-course in R&B. In short, MARDI GRAS MAMBO is a party in a jewel box. Rearranged R&B standards sit side-by-side with original compositions that highlight the musical similarities between these two extremely danceable styles of music. A one-of-a-kind release from Hannibal Records.
ICE CREAM OF THE WEEK: There is a time for music, and a time for ice cream. And heading up the frozen confection top ten this week is Howler Organic Gelato: surely the finest, richest, smoothest, phattening-est ice cream on the planet. Oh yeah. :-)

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: It's hard to believe the best reggae album of
the year might have come from Japan. But FULL CONTACT, the sophomore
release from Dry & Heavy, is certainly a contender for the title.
Featuring a tight, dubwise production style that owes allegiance to the
On-U Sound camp, plus vocals (in English) that are sometimes soulful and
sometimes edgy, this album really packs a wallop. From Green Tea.
MOVIE OF THE WEEK: "Girl on the Bridge," a super-stylish B&W film
from France, starring Daniel Auteuil and Vanessa Paradis as a sideshow
knife-thrower and his "lucky charm" assistant. I sat through the
entire film waiting to hear the French-language version of Lamb's
"Gorecki" that was included in the film's trailer, but it never
materialized. Drat! If anyone has information about this version of
the song, please clue me in.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: The musical legacy of Fela Kuti continues to
grow with yet another collection of obscure Afrobeat gems. Ocho Records,
following up their two excellent club-based compilations from Snowboy and
the Future World Funk Club DJ's, have tapped yet another club to curate a
compilation. The result is AFROBEAT: THE FUNKIEST MUSIC EVER MADE,
presented by the DJ posse from The Shrine, a London-based club named
after Fela's legendary Nigerian nightspot. Blending American pop, soul,
and funk influences with the more traditional African sounds, and
bookended by the requisite cuts from Afrobeat originators Fela and drummer
Tony Allen, AFROBEAT is yet another remarkable feat of musical archaeology.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Up, Bustle and Out's latest release picks up
where their "Che Guevara EP" left off: steeped in the musical flavors of
Cuba. REBEL RADIO: MASTER SESSIONS 1 takes its name in part from Radio
Rebelde, the communist pirate station originally set up by Che Guevara
and which has since become Cuba's national radio. For this release, and
a forthcoming second volume, the Bristolian band traveled to Havana to
record with traditional Cuban musicians. The resulting effort alternates
between funky hip hop grooves and the more traditional Cuban Descarga.
The project is really a multimedia one, incorporating CD-ROM material and,
in limited edition copies, a full-length book, "The Rebel Radio Diary."
A fine effort from a band that has been much too quiet lately!
SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Tonight's show also included a pre-recorded
phone interview with Basuki Bala, founder and leader of the 70's soul-jazz
band The Sons & Daughters of Lite, recently reformed after more than 20
years! For residents of the Bay Area, the Sons & Daughters will be opening
for Gilles Peterson next Tuesday night, August 15, at Bimbo's in San
Francisco. Special thanks to Basuki for taking the time out to chat with
me, and thanks also to Vinnie Esparza of Ubiquity for coordinating things.
Congratulations also go out to Vinnie for being voted "Best DJ" in this
year's Bay Guardian reader's poll. Way to go, Vin!
And now for the music...

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Taking the name of the world's horniest
chimpanzee ought to be enough to turn a few heads. But Bonobo certainly
doesn't need that kind of a gimmick. His debut album, ANIMAL MAGIC, is a
downtempo masterpiece, pure and simple. Instrumentally eclectic, with
some achingly beautiful melodies and lush arrangements, there is
definitely SOME kind of magic at work here. On the fledgling Tru
Thoughts label out of Brighton, England. (A fascinating, though
unrelated, site on the bonobo chimpanzee can be found at
www.blockbonobofoundation.org.)

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE: Resuming this Friday, and henceforth on every
1st and 3rd Friday of the month, I'll be spinning those jazzadelic grooves
during Happy Hour (5-8:30pm) at Fuel, 44 So. Almaden Ave. in San Jose.
No cover, free munchies, and the world's BEST beer on tap. (Boont Amber,
in case you're wondering.) And if that's not enough to motivate you,
this Friday you might want to stick around for the late show, too:
actress/musician Eszter Balint ("Stranger Than Paradise") will be
performing in support of her debut album. (There IS a cover charge for
the live music, though.) Hope to see you there...

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: EXERCISES DE STYLES, the debut album from Les Gammas.
Revolving around the duo of Mark Frank (DJ, drummer) and Jochen Helfert
(singer, pianist), Les Gammas create a sumptuous hybrid of jazz,
soundtracks, and club beats. Blurring the distinction between live and
electronic music, EXERCISES DE STYLES is stylish (of course!), groovy,
and VERY jazzadelic. On Compost Records.

...and winding up this week's edition of "Jazzadelica" was an abundance
of static, as KFJC lost power to our transmitter, curtailing the program
about 5 minutes early. :-(
In other news: The "Jazzadelica" nights at Fuel in San Jose are on
hiatus until sometime in August. More details as they become available.
In the meantime, I'd like to remind listeners in the Bay Area that I
am regularly updating an Event Calendar on my web site, so please check
that regularly for info on upcoming shows you might be interested in.

This week's edition of "Jazzadelica" fell during one of those occasional periods we
designate as "hog-wild week" at KFJC, where just about anything goes. So for this week's
show, I decided to focus on some VERY long tracks that I have previously skipped over due
to normal break clock considerations. I was also able to devote some extra time to the...
ALBUM OF THE WEEK: JAZZACTUEL, an awe-inspiring triple-CD set documenting three
amazing years in the development of "free jazz." From 1969-1971, the French BYG/Actuel
label lured cutting-edge American jazz artists to Europe for collaborative concerts and
recording dates. The result, sampled on this collection and documented with informative
liner notes by Thurston Moore and Byron Coley, was a body of ground-breaking work that
continues to exert influence to this day. Along with the equally-remarkable ESP-Disk catalog,
these BYG/Actuel releases (50+ total) are the definition of "free jazz." Exhilarating stuff
from Charly Records (UK).
