ALBUM OF THE WEEK: FRIKYIWA COLLECTION 1, the first of two compilations rounding up
the previous 12" output from Frederic Galliano's Frikyiwa label. Frenchman Galliano has
long been working to fuse electronic music with traditional African musical forms. To
inaugurate his new Frikyiwa label, Galliano selected several African artists from
the vaults of Cobalt Records and offered their tracks to remixers such as Aqua Bassino,
I.G. Culture, Chari Chari, Doctor L, and others. The result is a unique and varied collection
that never fails to underscore the commonalities between African music and modern dance.
LIVE GIG OF THE WEEK: Peter Brotzmann's Chicago Tentet (+ 2!), live at the Great
American Music Hall, San Francisco. Twelve of the fiercest players in contemporary
jazz, together on one stage, in an ensemble performance that was just plain incendiary.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Amon Tobin's SUPERMODIFIED. Tobin's third
full-length for Ninja Tune is even more eclectic and fascinating than his
previous two. Beat-heavy but largely ignoring Tobin's drum'n'bass roots,
SUPERMODIFIED layers sample upon sample into a complex but stimulating
aural journey that continues to surprise all the way through.
MINI-SPECIAL: Tonight's show included a special half-hour segment
featuring music and conversation with bedroom producer e:trinity. A
veteran musician and SoCal resident, e:trinity borrows elements of Filipino
traditional music for his unique electronic compositions.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: After some tantalizing guest appearances
on compilations, as well as the soundtrack to "Next Stop Wonderland,"
Bebel Gilberto delivers her full-length debut, TANTO TEMPO. The
daughter of bossa nova innovator Joao Gilberto and Brazilian singer
Miucha, Bebel brings her inherited vocal talents and international
worldview to bear on this smooth but sophisticated release. Co-produced
by Suba, with guest appearances from the likes of Amon Tobin, Thievery
Corporation, and Carlinhos Brown, TANTO TEMPO puts a modern perspective
on the classic bossa nova sound. From Ziriguiboom/Six Degrees Records.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: TOURIST, the sophomore release from St. Germain. Five years ago, Parisian Ludovic Navarre set the standard for jazz/house hybrids with his classic debut, BOULEVARD, under the pseudonym of St. Germain. ALBUM OF THE WEEK: CLOSE THE DOOR by German DJ/producer team Terranova.
Although this album was apparently released in 1999, only recently has it become
widely available in the States. Some fine downtempo trip hoppy-ness in the best
Massive Attack style, featuring guest vocals (in English) by the likes of Rasco,
Tricky, Cath Coffey (Stereo MC's), and a young lady named Coco. On Copasetik Records.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: DJ LOGIC Presents PROJECT LOGIC. The "fourth member" of Medeski,
Martin, and Wood has amassed a staggering amount of downtown NYC talent on his debut CD.
But despite the constantly shifting lineup, it sounds as cohesive as the best Bill Laswell
fusion projects. From John Medeski's Hammond B3 workouts, to rap from the Anti-Pop Consortium,
to the Eastern vibes of tabla master Karsh Kale, to go-go, trip hop, and Latin beats,
the whole shebang is marvelously sewn together by the textural skitting and whizzing of
turntablist Logic. A very impressive debut. On Ropeadope Records.
MOVIE OF THE WEEK: "Me, Myself, I," a delightfully THOUGHTFUL Australian comedy
starring Rachel Griffiths.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: The GROOVE DISTRIBUTION CD SAMPLER 1.01. Normally, I probably wouldn't feature a promo-only release as "album of the week." But when Dirk and the gang at GrooveDis sent me extra copies to give away to my listeners, how could I refuse? ;-) Seriously, this compilation is a fine roundup of what's going on in the groove music scene these days: a little house, a little downtempo, a little broken beat, a little drum'n'bass, etc. With first-time-on-CD tracks by Everyday People, Hefner, and London Elektricity. And you can't beat the price! Big thanks to GrooveDis for the freebies.
GIG OF THE WEEK: Once again, Femi Kuti tore it up at Bimbo's in San Francisco, to a sold-out house. The man's energy level is amazing! Nice to hear him do an encore of "Water No Get Enemy," as well.
MOVIE OF THE WEEK: James Toback's BLACK AND WHITE. An original, almost documentary-like narrative exploring race relations, with some equally interesting casting choices. Catch this one quickly, because it's too offbeat to stick around for long, I suspect.
CO-HOST OF THE WEEK: Joining me this week, and for the next several weeks, is new KFJC DJ-in-training Tom Foolery, who will be experiencing firsthand the joys and agonies of live radio. Good luck, Tom!
And last but not least, it's the PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK:

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Remix albums are often patchy affairs. Not so
with the Joakim Lone Octet's TIGER SUSHI REMIXED. While the original
album was an intriguing experiment in modern jazz fusion, this remix
album betters it by retaining the jazz flavor but adding even
more diversity in the beat department. The stellar cast of remixers
includes: Sci-Clone, Catalyst, Dego, Seiji, Restless Soul, and more.
Easily the most satisfying remix collection since Airto's REVENGE OF
THE KILLER BEES. On Future Talk/Versatile.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: CITY WATCHING, the debut album from Two Banks of
Four. Rob Gallagher (Galliano) and Dill Harris (Young Disciples), two
veterans of that practically embalmed genre known as "acid jazz," form
the core of this exciting new project that synthesizes many influences
to chart a unique path through dancefloor jazz culture. Anyone who's
been following the hard-to-pigeonhole "broken beat" artists (Neon
Phusion, Modaji, etc.) should check these guys, too. On Sirkus
Records.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: EARPRINTS by Conjoint. The second album from
David Moufang's ambient jazz ensemble features Karl Berger on
vibraphone and Gunther Ruit Kraus on guitar, along with Jamie Hodge
and David Moufang on a variety of electronics. Residing somewhere
between electric Miles and Mixmaster Morris, Conjoint have crafted an
impressionistic album full of atmosphere and rhythm. Guest musicians
fill out the sound with horns and reeds, but it is clearly the
combination of Berger's vibes with Moufang's spacey electronics that
make this project shine. On Source Records.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: SOUNDTRACK FOR LIFE by A:xus. The first single-
artist album release from Chicago's Guidance label, after 60-plus 12"s
and a half-dozen compilations, is the debut album from Austin Bascom,
aka Abacus, now recording as A:xus. It features the familiar vocal
tracks "Baghdad Cafe" and "When I Fall," as well as an eclectic
selection of new, and mostly instrumental, material. Rooted in the
classic techno sound of Derrick May, but incorporating elements of
house, drum'n'bass, hip hop, and more, A:xus' lush and beautiful debut
is indeed a fitting "soundtrack for life."

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: THE FUTURE AIN'T THE SAME AS IT USED 2 B...
according to Neon Phusion, who've released the first full-length album
from the burgeoning West London scene. Kaidi Tatham, Orin Walters,
and Alex Phountzi have created an exciting new hybrid soul music that
gains momentum throughout the course of the album, suggesting that
there are yet more avenues to explore before this "broken beat/house
not house" style has run its course. A great introduction to the West
London sound, on the Laws of Motion label.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: REDEMPTION by Slow Poke. Smoldering, bluesy jazz
by four of the best players around today. Slow Poke are: Michael
Blake (sax), Dave Tronzo (guitar), Tony Scherr (bass), and Kenny
Wollesen (drums). Following their demo-only release, AT HOME, Slow
Poke return with their first proper album: a totally captivating
combination of original tunes and unlikely cover versions (Johnny
Cash, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones). For fans of The Lounge Lizards or

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: More downtempo brilliance from Vienna's G-Stone
posse; this time it's SUZUKI by Tosca. Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert
Huber's second full-length (not counting remixes) is every bit the
equal of their debut, OPERA. No real surprises here, just more
extremely chilled-out and dubby grooves to induce some serious bouts
of head-nodding. It amazes me how consistently good the G-Stone
label has been, though. Long may they chill.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: BRAZILIAN BEATS, the 15th release on the Mr. Bongo
label, compiles classic, rare, and contemporary Brazilian tracks with
a dancefloor edge. From samba and bossa nova to the more modern funk,
soul, and house tracks, the quality and variety of material on here
keeps things interesting throughout. Another fine release in a whole
catalog of fine releases from Mr. Bongo.

This week's edition of "Jazzadelica" was an all-Brazilian show,
highlighting some recent releases, some essential labels and
compilations, and a few scattered curiosities. No "album of the week"
per se, but the most essential record for this week's show was
undoubtedly TRIP TO BRAZIL 2, the latest compilation from Brazilian
jazz producer and journalist Arnaldo DeSouteiro, on the Motor label.
Subtitled "Bossa and Beyond," TRIP TO BRAZIL 2 includes several rare
and/or unreleased tracks, as well as many classics, and fascinating
liner notes. It's expensive, but worth it.
